E-commerce study: Parcel terminals are the number one delivery method in the Baltics
Internet research and technology company Gemius conducted its annual E-commerce study in the Baltics. The study revealed that the majority of respondents prefer to receive their orders in parcel terminals, most popular of which in Latvia and Estonia is Omniva parcel machines. Regarding payment methods, Latvians and Estonians mainly prefer filling out card or internetbank information, but Lithuanians – using online money transfer system, such as Paypal, etc.
In the latest Gemius E-commerce study conducted in the Baltics, respondents were asked about their most prefered delivery methods. A clear dominant in all three countries is the use of parcel terminals chosen by more than 90 percent Estonians and Latvians, and almost 70 percent Lithuanians. Apart from parcel terminals, respondents also shared their wish to receive their orders using delivery by courier and meeting them in person – half of Lithuanian respondents and above 30 percent of Latvian and Estonian survey participants. The third most popular option shared by all three Baltic states is ordering products online but receiving them in person in the store or any other point of sale – such wish shared almost 40 percent Lithuanians and above 20 percent Estonians and Latvians. However, the least popular delivery method both in Latvia (10 percent) and Lithuania (15 percent) is delivery to the post office, but Estonians even less prefer to receive their orders at pick up points, such as Gas stations – only 1 percent.
When looking at the most prefered courier services in Latvia and Estonia, leader position is taken by Ominva parcel machines which are chosen by 90 percent Latvians and almost 80 percent Estonians. While around 70 percent of respondents from Estonia have used Smartpost (Itella) parcel machines, in Latvia this courier service is much less popular and chosen only by 15 percent. Above 60 percent of respondents in both countries have choosed DPD parcel machines, and around 20 percent – DPD delivery by courier. Popular courier services in Latvia are also DHL delivery by courier – 22 percent of respondents (4 percent in Estonia), Venipak parcel machines – 15 percent (5 percent in Estonia), and LatvianPost parcel terminals which have been used by 17 percent of respondents from Latvia.
Regarding the prefered payment methods, a clear leader in Latvia is filling out card or internetbank information used by 58 percent of respondents. In Lithuania such option was chosen by 27 percent but in Estonia – 60 percent which makes it a very close competitor with transfer from bank account used only by 2 percent less Estonians (58 percent). In favor of bank transfers voted 49 percent Latvians and 33 percent Lithuanians, however the most widely used payment method for Lithuanians is none of the previously mentioned, it is using online money trasfer systems such as Paypal, Webmoney, etc. – 45 percent Lithuanians shared that they use this method, while in Latvia it is used by 43 percent respondents but in Estonia – 38 percent. Meanwhile, the least popular payment method is paying with a text message/SMS which is used by less than 5 percent respondents from each of the Baltic states.
