Gemius unveils portrait of Bulgarian Internet users

The results of the analysis reveals that in July 2008 there were approximately 1.7 mln Bulgarian Internet users. Furthermore, the gemiusAudience study proves every third Internet user is a resident of the largest Bulgarian city – Sofia.
The presented data are provided thanks to the gemiusAudience study conducted by Gemius – the largest online research agency in Central and Eastern Europe. The gemiusAudience analysis was done on the basis of 100 web sites encompassed by the study, and audited with site-centric type of measurement. The output concerning the whole population of Internet users in Bulgaria was obtained from Synovate estimations.
According to the data collected by Synovate in July 2008 there were 1 682 255 million of Bulgarian Internet users.
The gemiusAudience results indicate that during that month each Internet user made 261 page views and spent nearly 4 hours and 30 minutes on average, surfing on the web sites.The majority of Internet users in Bulgaria surf web pages on a daily basis. They constitute 63.53% of the audience. The users browsing the web sites a few times per week came in second position, gaining the result of 22.93%. The smallest number comprises those who have the opportunity to use the Internet only few times per month – 7.30%.
Cities, where Bulgarian Internet users live
Analysing the places of residence of Bulgarian Internet users according to the number of citizens, the results of the research present that the biggest part of them come from the city having more than 100 000 inhabitants. They constitute 62% of the audience. 30% of Bulgarian Internet users live in Sofia and every twelfth comes from Varna. Every sixth (18%) visitor of the studied web sites declared living in the city comprising of 20 000 – 99 999 inhabitants and every eighth is a resident of the city counting 5 000 – 19 999 inhabitants. Only 7% of Bulgarians are the citizens of less than 5 000 inhabitants town.
Usage of PC computers
Interesting may also be the fact that the PC computer in Bulgaria can be used by more than one user. As the results indicate, 42% of the Bulgarian web sites visitors use the computer exclusively by their selves. In case when there are many users of the one computer, every fourth Bulgarian makes use of it more than the other people as well having access to the PC. 22% of Bulgarians connect to the Internet from the one computer equally with its other users. Only every eighth Internet user have the possibility to browse the Web using the PC computer less than the others.
However, Internet users from the category “I use a PC more than the others” seem to be more active than the rest. A total of 280 page views were made by a user in this category and spent 4 hours, 44 minutes and 28 seconds. 266 page views done a user who uses the PC computer exclusively and he/she dedicated 4 hours, 40 minutes and 27 seconds browsing the web sites. The third position took Internet user using PC equal with the others, making 252 page views and spending 4 hours, 8 minutes and 42 seconds.
Places of connection to the Web
The most common place where Internet users in Bulgaria connect to the Internet is home. This group of users is the largest and amounts to 92.67%. Bulgarians seem to have less possibilities to surf the Web at work, when only 46.19% of them indicated workplace as the spot of the connection to the Internet. Nearly 30% of the users have an opportunity to go through the World Wide Web at the place of their friends or neighbours. And only 17.51% of the Bulgarians are able to browse the Web in public places.
